AlaSkins is owned by Sara Erickson, who was born in Newhalen, Alaska – a Yupik village that lies on the north shore of Lake Iliamna and raised on the Kenai Peninsula. Sara is a 3rd generation Alaskan who grew up commercial fishing with her family in Bristol Bay and on the Cook Inlet. She fell in love with Alaska's beauty at an early age and is passionate about the health benefits of wild Alaskan seafood, protecting Alaska's marine life, and keeping our oceans pristine & free from toxic contaminants that enter coastal areas and oceans.
Even as a young girl, Sara’s father spoke of the nutritional value of the fish skins being thrown away by the commercial fish processing plants. This planted the idea in Sara to take those nutritious skins and someday make a premium pet treat. That idea came to full fruition with her company AlaSkins, which manufactures and sells premium, natural and healthy dog treats using those fish skins, at her production plant in Soldotna, Alaska.
Although AlaSkins officially started in 2017, it wasn't until 2020 when our first retail store was opened and moved into our first manufacturing plant. Since then we've continued to grow and our pet treats are now sold in over 80 stores across Alaska and in the Lower 48. AlaSkins was also recently awarded Soldotna Business of the Year, Alaska Manufacturer of the Year, and Industry Innovator.
AlaSkins is a proud sponsor of Alaska Sled Dog Races and Mushers, as well as many local schools and community events. AlaSKins is also a supporter of animal rescue shelters and donates AlaSkins treats to the Kenai Peninsula Animal Rescue and the Kenai Animal Shelter.
Max is Sara's black lab and the mascot of AlaSkins, and face is featured on our logo and on every bag of AlaSkins! You can follow Max's posts on Instagram at @AlaSkinsMax907
AlaSkins is located at 44761 Sterling Highway, Soldotna, Alaska overlooking the beautiful Kenai River.
Open net fish farming is quite possibly the most overlooked environmental catastrophe of our day. AlaSkins believes in supporting, using, and eating sustainably caught fish. Alaska's fishing industry still boasts the last remaining wild fishery in the world where wild salmon swim free in our massive bays, seas, and Pacific ocean. Alaska's salmon are allowed to naturally migrate until they find the same lakes, rivers and streams in which their life began, to spawn and then die, helping to continue the timeless, beautiful and magical cycle of life.
Sara’s passion to keep our wild salmon healthy drove her to make a documentary called A Fishy Tale, which explores the dangers of open net fish farming and its potential threat to Alaska’s wild salmon fisheries.
Our ecosystem is dependent on healthy wild salmon "There are 137 documented species that are dependent on wild salmon, 41 are mammals including orcas, bears and river otters, 89 are birds, including bald eagles, Caspian terns and grebes, five are reptiles and two are amphibians."- BlueFish.org
AlaSkins are a single ingredient treat made from 100% wild Alaskan fish skins - salmon, halibut, and cod. Nothing else is added to these crunchy and healthy dog treats - just naturally filled with vitamins, packed with protein, and fish oils! The fish skins come from Alaskan commercial fisherman’s catch who are sustainably harvesting wild Alaskan seafood.
Exploring new ways to eliminate waste by turning what was once considered fish waste into a valuable resource is Sara's continued vision and mission of AlaSkins.
